The second edition of International Women’s Film Festival kicked off in Herat on Saturday. Over the three days, 58 films would be screened, all about the women-centric subjects.
Thousands of artists from various countries have assembled in the beautiful western province of Herat for this much-anticipated festival.
Organized by Armanshahr Open Asia and Roya Film House, the festival will screen 42 films in the official competition that are either produced by women or speak about women’s rights issues. Besides that, 16 films would be screened outside the competition.
The festival aims at underlining the contribution of women in the area of filmmaking, probing women-centric issues, and extending support for women filmmakers.
The three top films would be awarded in the festival, said the organizers.

According to Roya Sadat, who heads Roya Film House, a number of films from all across the world have been submitted in this festival.
“This festival is an excellent opportunity to highlight the vital role of women in society, and some of the struggles that women face in Afghanistan and around the world,” said Karim Lahidji, President of FIDH. “Respect for women’s rights is essential to a well-functioning and peaceful society, and FIDH is proud to be part of this groundbreaking initiative.”
FIDH, a federation of 164 human rights NGOs operating in more than 100 countries, is supporting the festival.
The first edition of this festival was held in March 2013, coinciding with International Women’s Day. A total of 36 movies were screened and more than 1500 people attended the event, including women filmmakers. This second edition of the festival was delayed due to elections.
