In Pictures: TEDxKabul 2014 speakers inspire hope with challenging ideas

This year’s TEDxKabul event was held on Thursday in Kabul. Many Afghan speakers presented their innovative and challenging ideas.



Built on the theme of inspiring hope, this year’s event aimed to create a new platform for the city’s sharpest thinkers and visionaries to inspire conversation and collaboration.



TEDxKabul was conceived by a group of individuals to exchange innovative and challenging ideas. TEDxKabul celebrates the stories, ideas, and innovations of Afghans effecting positive changes in their communities.



Tarique Qayumi, a noted filmmaker, spoke about how story telling can heal the wounds of war.



Mariam Atash, a social entrepreneur and attorney, spoke about re-branding a nation.



Nabila Moradi, an Organizational Development Specialist of Counterpart International in Afghanistan, spoke about women in the legal profession.



Hakim Young, a medical doctor from Singapore who has done humanitarian and social enterprise work in Afghanistan for the past 10 years, spoke about the importance of peace building.



Sanzar Kakar, Chairman of Afghanistan Holding Group, spoke about the importance of exchanges.



Malek Mohammad, an Afghan paralympian swimmer, spoke about turning adversity into strength.



Mohammad Sediq Rashid, Director of Mine Action Coordination Center of Afghanistan, said it is important to protect civilians from post conflict explosive hazards.



Farshid Ghyasi, Founder and CEO of Netlinks Ltd, spoke about his life journey as an Afghan IT entrepreneur.



Rameen Javid, who has worked in Afghanistan for two decades, spoke about the development that can be done through art.



TED, a nonprofit organization devoted to ‘Ideas Worth Spreading’, started as a four-day conference in California 25 years ago. Over the years, it has grown to support those path-breaking ideas with multiple initiatives. The annual TED Conference invites the world’s leading thinkers to speak for 18 minutes.



TED speakers have included Bill Gates, Al Gore, Jane Goodall, Elizabeth Gilbert, Sir Richard Branson, Nandan Nilekani, Philippe Starck, Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, Isabel Allende and former UK Prime Minister Gordon Brown.



TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience.   



At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group.
