Major terror plot foiled by police in Kabul

The police in Kabul have foiled a major terrorist plot by arresting at least 17 armed insurgents on Tuesday night, according to local security officials.

The insurgents were arrested in a joint operation by police and intelligence officials late on Tuesday, after they raised a house in Bagrami district of Kabul.

According to Hashmatullah Stankezai, spokesperson of Kabul Police, the insurgents had plotted many major attacks in Kabul city.

The raid took place hours after the new cabinet of ministers was announced at a special ceremony in presidential palace on Tuesday

One of the insurgents, according to reports, blew himself up during the police raid. A large quantity of arms and ammunition was recovered during the raid, including many suicide vests.

Police personnel suffered no casualties during the operation. There has been no official comment from Taliban on this incident so far.

The raid took place hours after the new cabinet of ministers was announced at a special ceremony in presidential palace on Tuesday.

As expected, Rahmatullah Nabil was appointed the Director General of National Directorate of Security (NDS), the premier security and intelligence agency of Afghan government.

There has been a spurt in incidents of violence in Afghanistan since the formation of new government in September. The armed insurgents, in a bid to derail the peace process, have upped ante across the country, carrying out many suicide attacks.

Kabul has witnessed the maximum number of suicide attacks in past three months, creating panic and unease among the city residents.

President Ghani has extended an olive branch to the Taliban, asking them to join the peace process. He has also drawn criticism for referring to them as “political opponents”.

At the London Conference on Afghanistan, he said peace in Afghanistan’s top priority and the new government is committed to pursue the peace process. He added that the cooperation of Pakistan is important for peace in Afghanistan.
