Indian traders import onion from Afghanistan amid soaring prices and shortage

As onion prices skyrocket in markets across India, the import of the commodity from Afghanistan has increased in recent weeks and is likely to surge further.

Onion prices have been on the rise across India with people castigating government for not doing enough to contain price rise.

On Sunday, Indian government floated tenders for the import of 10,000 tonnes of onions to deal with the price hike.

Traders in India have started to import onions, a staple food for Indians, from Afghanistan through the Attari-Wagah route.

Traders from Punjab and Delhi, the two northern Indian states, are finding it easy to import onions from Afghanistan to deal with the surge in onion prices in domestic markets.

Anil Mehra, Amritsar-based trader, told Press Trust of India (PTI) that the import of onions from Afghanistan has increased in recent weeks.

Traders from Punjab and Delhi, the two northern Indian states, are finding it easy to import onions from Afghanistan to deal with the surge in onion prices in domestic markets

“Against two to four trucks a day initially, now minimum six to seven trucks carrying onion are crossing over to India via Attari-Wagah land route (in Punjab) from Afghanistan,” he said.

Traders, though, refused to disclose the rate at which they are importing onions from Afghanistan.

“At present, the Afghanistan crop is a bit unripe. But we expect in next few days, the crop will get matured and thus more consignment will flow into India,” Amritsar-based trader Rajdeep Uppal told PTI.

Mr. Mehra, however, lamented that onions from Afghanistan are not of superior quality.

“Onions from Afghanistan are not of superior quality. Moreover, the wastage is much more in the imported item while being brought in trucks,” he said.

The retail price of onions in India has increased by nearly 50 percent over the past few weeks, grabbing headlines and becoming a cause of worry for government authorities.
