A Ukrainian national who was being held hostage by Taliban insurgents in Afghanistan has been released as a result of efforts made by the Afghan and Russian authorities.
Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said on Saturday that Dmytro Bilyi had been freed “as a result of active efforts of the Russian authorities in close cooperation with the Afghan side”.
Ms. Zakharova did not give further details about how Bilyi was released from the captivity of militants.
She said Russia was “ready at any time” to hand Bilyi over to Ukrainian authorities in Afghanistan.
The reports about Bilyi’s abduction surfaced after he posted a video appeal on the internet earlier this month.
Bilyi, according to reports, had been working in Afghanistan for a construction company for about 10 years.
