At least 22 insurgents affiliated with the Taliban and Islamic State (IS) groups have been killed and 21 others injured in the ongoing military operation in eastern Nangarhar province.
The operation named ‘Shaheen 09’ was launched in Laghurjo and Sayed Ahmad Khel areas of Kot district last week to flush out militants hiding in the area.
Hazrat Omar Mashriqiwal, a spokesman for the provincial police, confirmed that the military operation is currently underway and insurgents have suffered heavy casualties.
A large assortment of arms and ammunition has also been seized during the operation, he said.
While Mr. Mashriqiwal rejected reports that Afghan security forces also suffered some casualties, according to sources at least five army personnel have been injured in the clashes.
Meanwhile, the National Directorate of Security (NDS) has arrested a total of 23 suspected militants during raids over the past few days.
The militants, according to a statement issued by the NDS, were planning to carry out many attacks during the festival of Eid al Azha.
